Do i need a special plan for sprint smartphones?

I'm looking at getting an individual plan from sprint. I was thikning of maybe getting the palm centro or maybe blackberry pearl, but i heard that you'd need some special plan for the media or something of the relation? Is this true? How much $ a month would that be?
