Is there a disease where your muscles freeze up while you're completely awake?

I was thinking my friend had sleep paralysis because it usually happens when he wakes up, but he was just gargling mouthwash and then he couldn't move and he got mouthwash all over himself and he snapped out of it but his eyes and face hurt afterwards.
