Is there anyplace on the web to research family history without paying an arm and a leg?

I am not sure of the actual web address, but supposedly the Mormon Church has a website that used to be free to people doing genealogy. Would probably be under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Have you tried a search for that website?
